How to have better one2ones

one2one Purpose

To create the opportunity for team members and team leaders to regularly, review, discuss, plan, and record progress and performance in both personal and operational terms.

one2one Outcomes

Team members will have briefed the team leaders with

  • What had gone well, and not so well, in the previous period.
  • What their plans and objectives are for the next period.
  • What progress have they made towards their annual objectives
  • What progress had been made on training and personal development
  • What support they need from the team leader.

Team leaders will have briefed the team members with

  • Feedback as to their how their contribution has been perceived.
  • Responses to advice and support requested.
  • Advice on personal development.
  • And agreed objectives for the next period, with measurement.

one2one Rules

  • One to Ones are never cancelled, they are only ever postponed, and usually never more than 72 hours.
  • Always meet in a place conducive to successful meetings.
  • There is always an action list published after each meeting by the team leader.
  • Both parties always prepare meeting content in advance.
  • The date for the next one to one is bought to the meeting by the team leader and amended, or confirmed, by the team member.

Common key questions for Team Leader to ask of Team Members at one to one reviews

  1. Review of annual personal objectives and possible resetting of objectives for the balance of the year.

  2. Review progress against the original objectives.

  3. What has gone well, and not so well, this month.

  4. What objectives have you set for next month, and how will you measure progress towards them.

  5. What can I do to help you achieve your objective?

  6. Do you think you have lived up to the expectations of your fellow team members this month?
